The company that produced the anime is called Studio Pierrot, who were also involved in Ayashi no Ceres, Hyper Police, Naruto, Saiyuki, Tokyo Underground, Urusei Yatsura, and many more. The animation is very good quality for a show this long. The anime is good in that it develops the characters more, in the manga, we do not see as much of the other Mew Girls beckgrounds, or Akasaka's, whereas this characters are fleshed out better in the anime, as there is more time. Even Masha is given lime light.

The anime follows the manga in the events that happened, but is often expanded or changed to make it more comical. For instance, the girls all do go to a party in the anime in which Ichigo dances with Ryou like in the manga: it preserves key moments in relationships. However, it is not focused on Retasu, the other girls (Zakuro and Purin) haven't been introduced yet, and the episode also features an additional character.

The opening of the anime also changes, once Mew Zakuro is properly introduced, here is the first part of the first opening:

Opening 1:

Akasaka: The Earth. A beautiful blue planet with more than a million species living on it. The Earth. However, there are more than 2,500 species that are about to become extinct. We must stand up against this threat now, for the sake of all living things and ourselves.

Opening 2:

I'm Momoiya Ichigo, 13 years old, I used to be a normal Junior High School Student until I became a Mew Mew to save the earth! My ears and tail pop out when I get excited, and if you didn't tell me that I can't return back to normal until I defeat all the aliens. Well, I gues there's no point worrying about it, I've found friends who'll fight alongside with me. Let's go everyone! I'll serve for the earth's future! Nyan!

The group who released the fansub that most people watched was a group called Honobono. As a general rule, Honobono do not sub violent anime, action dramas, mecha etc. And tend to stick with more friendly, quriky anime.

Tokyo Mew Mew was licensed by 4Kids in the form of Mew Mew Power, however only the first half of the series ended up being dubbed.

Cafe Mew Mew would like to give a big thank you to Honobono for introducing so many peole to Tokyo Mew Mew ^__^
